Coleman attends Camp Kudzu
More than 3,000 Georgia children live with type 1 (juvenile) diabetes, a disease for which there is no cure. Diabetes must be managed each day with medicine and constant monitoring of blood glucose levels. Each case is unique and complicated. Empowering children with the tools to manage their diabetes- and reduce the risks for life threatening complications- is so important. A stress-free, fun and safe environment is the best way to develop positive diabetes management for children. Children with juvenile diabetes can never take a vacation from the disease. But there is now a place for them to learn and grow with other children facing the same struggles. "I want families who have children with diabetes, in Emanuel and surrounding counties, to know about this camp," said Coleman. "It is a wonderful experience for these children to meet others in their same situation." Camp Kudzu is a nonprofit organization providing education, recreation and peer-networking programs for Georgia's children living with juvenile diabetes. Led by dedicated volunteers, medial professionals and a small professional staff, Camp Kudzu hosts this weeklong overnight Summer Camp, Family Camps and other diabetes education and management programs throughout the year. Camp Kudzu was founded in 1999 by parents, doctors, health professionals and community leaders who joined forces to establish a program in Georgia that would support the special medical needs of children with type 1 (insulin-dependent) diabetes in a fun, safe environment. For more information about the camp, contact: Camp Kudzu, Inc., 577 Concord Rd., Suite B, Smyrna, Ga. 30082 or send an e-mail to info@campkudzu. org. To reach them by phone, call 404-250- 1811.
