Ferry pleased with spring game
By ANDY CALLAWAY

DEA SPRING GAME
Spring football concluded at David Emanuel Academy last Thursday with a 92 play, one hour and forty five minute scrimmage versus Bethesda Day School. New Head Coach James Ferry, installing his system at DEA, was pleased with the outing.

"I was pleased that the kids were willing to work as hard as they did and hit as hard as they did. Everyone got to play and we came away with no injuries" Ferry said afterwards.

The team had eight days of practice leading up to the spring game. Aside from implementing a new offensive system, the split back veer, and getting players some valuable playing time, there were other purposes for the scrimmage as well.

"We got our basic plays down on film," Ferry said. "Now we can better evaluate our players and determine if we have everyone in the right spots."

As one might have predicted, the upperclassmen were the ones that were the most impressive in the controlled scrimmage environment.

"Our five seniors, Brandon Blount, Joseph Sparks, John Mark Sweat, Devon Scalf and John Dekle really stood out," said Ferry. "It was easy to see that these guys had played football before. We just have to get everybody else up to their level."

Overall Ferry was happy with his first spring in Stillmore but he realizes that much work is left to be done.

"I was happy that we made good contact and that we able to teach our basic drills," Ferry remarked. "I feel like the kids also had fun playing in this system. But we are going to have to get better at staying on our blocks and playing until the whistle blows. Our tackling will have to improve also. There was way too much reaching going on."

18 players participated in spring practice and three others missed to injury or being academically ineligible. Those players, plus some newcomers expected to enroll for the upcoming school year, could swell the roster to 25 or more by August 6 when fall practice begins. In the interim, Ferry has specific plans for his troops.

"We will be in the weight room this summer. We must get stronger," said Ferry. Every player will be expected to make 25 workouts during the summer.
