Commission reviews DOT plans Vonda Everett, district planning and programming engineer for Georgia Department of Transportation, was present at Emanuel County Commission meeting to review the Rural State Improvement Program for 2008-2011. Projects include railroad warning devices on Coleman, Green and Pine street, the sidewalks and lighting project of city of Swainsboro and the widening of U.S. Highway 1. In other business, commissioners approved the 2008 budget of the District Attorney's office. DA Steve Askew asked for a three percent cost of living adjustment and raises for one assistant district attorney and two staff employees. The board also approved the 2008 budget of the Indigent Defense Council. Attorney Jim Collins was present to ask for an eight percent increase and 50 percent of $90,000, which is the refund of allocated money not used in last year's budget. Commissioners rescinded the motion to appoint Reid Derr to the Emanuel County Elections Board due to the fact that Derr is the Emanuel County Republican chairman and local legislation prohibits him from serving on the Elections board. Commissioners opened bids for the new metal building at Dellwood Volunteer Fire Department. Submitting bids were Proctor Construction, $37,448; and L.A Brett, $35,921. County Administrator Ezra Price was authorized to review bids. Commissioners also approved: + Accepted the property and improvements known as the "Cattle Barn" from Georgia State Properties Commission. This is the property used by Emanuel County 4-H, Extension Office and the annual fair. + Appointed Nellie Davis to fill the unexpired term of Ray Woods on the Emanuel County Department of Family and Children Services Board. + A soil pit agreement with Foyea Fisher.
