Council rejects building bids

At a called meeting Tuesday, May 15, Swainsboro city council rejected all bids for the proposed public safety building and voted to negotiate with the architect to see if money could be saved on the project. All bids submitted were over the allotted budget for the building. Bids submitted were from the following:

WBM Construction, $1,511,000; Mercer Construction, $1,4400,000; Stewart Corbitt Construction, $1,418,500; and Harry Moses Construction, $1,344,403.

Mayor Charles Schwabe told council that it had three options: 1. Accept the low bid from Harry Moses Construction even though it was $344,000 above budget; 2. Reject all bids and talk to the architect about saving money; 3. Reduce the size of the project.

Administrator Al Lawson informed council that the city has $1,006,748.34 in the public safety account for the project. Fred Baker of Harry Moses Construction was present at the meeting and said that some cuts could be made to help the city remain within budget. He said he could recommend cuts that would save $230,000. Mayor Schwabe said the process to evaluate these cuts and changes could take 30-45 days.
