Foster Care Month is in May Imagine a world in which the concept of "family" is turned on its head, a world in which you are forced to pack your belongings and move to a new home and new family. It is most likely that you are not making the move with your brothers and sisters who are being placed in other different homes with other new families. Now imagine doing this as a teenager. Imagine for a moment that you are the family taking in a child who is confused, rootless, upset and going through all the changes associated with puberty. Very little imagination is required if you are a teen in foster care in the U.S. or one of the foster families who open their hearts and homes to children in desperate need of stability. The foster care "system" is only as good as the people who choose to be a part of it. With the help of more members of Emanuel County, the lives of these young people will change for the better. There is an urgent need for many more people to come forward and serve these young people. Without permanent, nurturing relationships with adults, teens in foster care are far more likely than their peers in the general population to endure homelessness, poverty, compromised health, unemployment, incarceration and other adversities after they leave the foster care system. No matter how much time you have to give, you have the power to do something positive that will make a difference in the life of a child in foster care. When was the last time you read a positive story about a child in foster care who was succeeding in school or in life? When was the last time you read a profile about a foster family that opened up their home and hearts to children who desperately needed them?
