DEAR EDITOR:

May is Mental Health Month and May 20-26 is Schizophrenia Awareness Week. Schizophrenia is an illness that affects 2.4 million Americans.

Thursday, May 24th at 7 p.m. the group Recovery In Progress will hold its 1st Annual Schizophrenia Awareness Night at the Boneyard in Swainsboro to inform people about Schizophrenia and the group Recovery In Progress, a consumer led group of consumers dealing with mental illness that attend a local day service program. Recovery In Progress helps educate and reduce stigma about Schizophrenia and other related illnesses.

Recovery In Progress is a self-help consumer led group where persons suffering from Schizophrenia and other related illnesses work on staying well and supporting each other in staying well. At R.I.P. we share our struggles and triumphs and work on bringing more quality of life to persons suffering from Schizophrenia and related illnesses. Persons belonging to R.I.P. are not crazy or lazy people who are a burden to society, but involved members of your community. We did not choose to be ill by some weakness or failure on our part, but have a biological brain disorder that can be medically treated like diabetes or heart disease.

We encourage each and everyone in the community to come out and really find out what Schizophrenia and mental illness is all about don't just assume. We invite everyone to come out to our 1st Annual Schizophrenia Awareness Night, Thursday May 24th at 7 p.m. at the Bone Yard in Swainsboro. Enjoy entertainment by Kindred Spirit.
