A Swainsboro city road block on Friday, April 20 proved to be highly successful for local and outof town officers. The event, which was coordinated by Lt. Paul Jordan through the Governor's Office of Highway Safety, included the participation of officers from Richmond, Midway, Hephzibah and Washington counties, as well as Wadley and Wrens police departments and Georgia State Patrol.

"Swainsboro Police Department, a member of the South Central District, was asked permission to conduct this traffic check," said Swainsboro police Chief Johnny Shuman. Road blocks were conducted from about 1:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. on North Coleman, New, Harris, Lewis and Rentz streets and Highway 56 and Anderson Drive. Over 32 officers and four canine units worked the road blocks. SPD Division Commander George Culbreth and Sgt. Lanier Griswold were among local coordinators.

Confiscated in the traffic stops were 121 bags of controlled substances that included everything from $100 one-gram bags of crack cocaine to nickel bags of marijuana and one $500-$700 crack "cookie." Officers checked over 800 vehicles and made 48 arrests for no driver's license, no insurance, no seat belts, no child restraints and driving under the influence.

"Look out for another one of these road blocks soon," warned Chief Shuman. "We need to work some things out logistically, but we will have another road block."

Chief Shuman commended Lt. Jordan and the Drug Task Force for their hard work.
