May may be another great month for art!
Swainsboro High School will present "Footloose" on Thursday and Saturday nights beginning at 7 p.m. at Swainsboro-Emanuel County Auditorium. For more information contact SHS at 237-2267. Pinetree Festival events begin on this coming weekend. With the theme "Emanuel Memories," the Garden Clubs' annual Standard Flower Show will take place April 28-29. Horticulture, design and educational exhibits will be on view at the Vann Community House from 1-4 p.m. both days. Admission is free. You will be amazed at the wonderful work you will see there. Radio Jones will present their Battle of the Bands on the Boneyard on Saturday beginning at noon. At least ten bands from throughout the region will participate in the event. And among the judges is a record rep from New York City! Another form of art that Radio Jones is encouraging is Culinary Arts with a Grill-off that has 15 competitors. They also are sponsoring the Pinetree Festival poster contest in the schools.
Later that evening, The Friends of Jason Wicker will present "Live from Swainsboro...It's Saturday Night!" at the Swainsboro/Emanuel County Auditorium at 8 p.m. You can visit MySpace.com/SwainsboroSNL to for more about this incredible event. Special musical guest will be Dayfall. Their MySpace is dayfallrocks if you would like to hear their music and learn more about them. They will also be competing in the Battle of the Bands. Beginning May 6, well-known Twin City artist Eileen Dudley will have her work on view at the Kalmanson Gallery. The public is invited to the opening reception from 2-3:30 p.m. which is hosted by the Pilot Club of Emanuel County. Plans for the Second Saturday Art Stroll on May 12 include live music and possibly children activities, as well as art on display in several venues around Swainsboro. Local artists C. Noah Powers and Joan Martin Dunn will exhibit their work at Jack's Java Cove. They are planning on showing new work that has not been seen before. That Dunn person, however, might only have SNL programs and costumes as her most recent efforts. April has been a very exciting month with the Art Stroll, three open mic nights at Jack's Java Cove, and on my part, several SNL rehearsals. I was honored to have my work "Emanuel Harvest" accepted for the Industrial Identify exhibit at the Gallery RFD. The Artists Guild worked with the Emanuel Arts Council, the Stillmore Roots Group and Gallery RFD at the Relay for Life Kids Zone. We came up with some Elvis-related art projects that were great fun, including painting on black "velvet," the Ain't Nothing but a Hound Dog coloring contest, and Spinout Spin Art. We also thoroughly enjoyed the Springer Theatrical's "Some Enchanted Evening" with more than 40 Rodgers and Hammerstein songs. Emanuel Arts Council with help from the Millcreek Foundation brought this professional performance here for which I am very grateful. Joan Dunn is an artist, member of the Emanuel Arts Council Board of Directors and President of the Emanuel Artists Guild. She is interested in learning about creative arts efforts throughout the area. Contact her at jdunn@nctv.com.
