Walter Smith visits ECI

SMITH MINGLES WITH ECI STUDENTS IN CAFETERIA
Walter Smith, motivational speaker and professional body builder, from Columbus, Ohio, spent the day at Emanuel County Institute, Wednesday, March 28.

Mr. Smith's "Against All Odds" story has been told on national television's Hard Copy, Primetime, BET News, and Nitebeat. He shared his story of being convicted and sentenced to 6 to 25 years for an admitted felony and sentenced to serve life for unrelated rapes that he did not commit. He was exonerated and freed via DNA evidence following 11 years of wrongful imprisonment.

Mr. Smith spoke to assemblies of both middle school and high school students. He related a candid testimony of overcoming a severe drug addition, cigarette smoking and other self destructive behaviors. He also joined students in the cafeteria during lunch to interact with them about his experiences.

Mr. Smith has spoken before members of The Ohio State Senate Judiciary and Criminal Justice Committee and participated in a Criminal Justice Workshop with Columbus, Ohio, Police Chief James Jackson and Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Stephanie Tubbs. He was appointed to The African American Male Empowerment Commission by Columbus, Ohio, Mayor Michael Coleman.
