The big 'catch' from a local pond

Due to his combative behavior, Padron was placed in a solitary confinement cell.
One of the job requirements for law enforcement personnel from Emanuel County Sheriff's Office and Swainsboro Police Department sometimes includes swimming in a pond to retrieve a suspect. Such was the case Thursday, March 22 when SPD officers were called to the Wal-Mart shopping center at about 1:30 p.m. in reference to a man who was harassing shoppers. Arrested for felony obstruction of an officer was Christopher Robin Padron, 25, 10611 Memory Lane, Statesboro.

According to a report by Investigator Rocky Davis of the Sheriff's Office, Padron was approached by him, the reporting officer, in the parking lot of the shopping center. Padron asked Davis for a cigarette lighter. Davis then tried to initiate a field interview with the suspect, who appeared intoxicated. Padron fled on foot and officer gave chase. Padron then removed a 12-ounce beer bottle from his pants and threw it at Davis, striking him in the chest.

Padron continued to flee and eventually dove into the pond behind the shopping center. He swam for approximately 30 minutes in the water. During this time SPD Officer Curtis Armstrong entered the pond to try and get him. However, Padron soon surrendered to authorities and was taken to Emanuel County Jail.
