Veleta Durden Cannady, 94

TWIN CITY--Funeral for Veleta Durden Cannady, 94, was held Saturday, March 24, 2007 at 11 a.m. at New Beulah United Methodist Church in Metter with Rev. Donna Ashworth and Rev. Bill Thompson officiating. Burial was in Antioch Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery. She died Thursday, March 22, 2007, at her residence after an extended illness.

Mrs. Cannady, a native of Candler County, a homemaker and retired from Emanuel County Institute. She was a member of New Beulah United Methodist Church and was preceded in death by her parents, Grady and Vella Cowart Durden, husband, Wallace Perry Cannady and sons, William Paul Cannady and Ronald Cannady.

Survivors include a daughter-in-law, Betty Farrow Cannady of Martinez; three sons, Charles E. and Lavon Cannady of Ft. Worth, Texas; Robert and Peggy Cannady of Mayo, Fla.; and Jerrell and Brenda Cannady of Swainsboro; a sister, Deloise Froberg of Locust Grove; two brothers, G. W. Durden and Euell Durden of Metter; several grandchildren and several greatgrandchildren.

Pallbearers were Gary Cannady, Alan Cannady, Craig Cannady, Mac Cannady, Dale Cannady, Ron Cannady, Paul Cannady and Ted Cannady.

Should friends desire, contributions may be made to Community Hospice, Vidalia, GA or New Beulah United Methodist Church, Metter.

Juanita Greenway Sammons, 79

WADLEY--Funeral for Juanita Greenway Sammons, 79, was held Monday, March 26, 2007 at 2 p.m. at Wadley First United Methodist Church with Dr. Larry Sauls officiating. Burial was in Wadley Cemetery. She died Friday, March 23, 2007 at Jefferson Hospital in Wadley.

Mrs. Sammons was born in Jefferson County and had lived all her life in Wadley. She was a retired hairdresser and a member of Wadley First United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her brother, Edward Greenway. Memorial contributions may be made to Wadley First United Methodist Church Building Fund, 36 W. Calhoun St., Wadley, GA 30477.

Survivors include three daughters, Bonita Handy of Wadley; Jan Gaston (Greg) of Swainsboro; and Ginger Hall (Albert) of Swainsboro; a son, Bruce Sammons (Lynn) of Martinez; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Horace Harrell, Ronnie Greenway, Randall Greenway, Larry Watkins, Mark Greenway, William Hall and Johnnie Hall.

George E. Ellis, 70

ENIGMA--Funeral for George E. Ellis, 70, was held Monday, March 26, 2007 at 2 p.m. at Eastside Baptist Church in Tifton with Rev. Calvin Bobo officiating. Burial was in Tift Memorial Gardens. He died Thursday, March 22, 2007 at Tift Regional Medical Center in Tifton.

Mr. Ellis, formerly of Swainsboro, was born on June 29, 1936 in Ben Hill County to James Franklin Ellis and Arlie Mae Barnes Ellis. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Jessica Rae Hosmer, who died in 2006. He attended school in Ben Hill County and later served in the U.S. Air Force. A police officer for three years in Fitzgerald and then a Georgia state trooper in Swainsboro and Milledgeville where he served 14 years, Mr. Ellis had lived in Tift and Berrie counties since 1976. He retired as security manager of Tifton Aluminum. He was a member of Eastside Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Donna Rae Bolger Ellis of Enigma; a son, Frank Ellis of Swainsboro; a daughter, Dawn Marie Kittrell and husband Nolan of Lizella; three brothers, William Howard Ellis of Orlando, Fla.; James Franklin Ellis of Waycross; and Thurman Grady Ellis of Fitzgerald; five grandchildren, Chris Riner, Nathan Kittrell, Laura Ellis, Anna Ellis and Jacob Ellis; and two greatgrandchildren.

Cora Lee May Cowart, 87

SWAINSBORO--Funeral for Cora Lee May Cowart, 87, was held Thursday, March 22, 2007 at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church with Dr. Robert Blankenship officiating. Burial was in Kite City Cemetery. She died Tuesday, March 20, 2007, at Emanuel Medical Center Nursing Home after an extended illness.

Mrs. Cowart was a native of Johnson County. She retired from Emanuel County Nursing Home after 25 years of service as a Certified Nursing Assistant and was a member of The First Baptist Church and the TEL-Joy-Faithful Workers Sunday School Class. She was preceded in death by her parents, Esa and Jennie V. Tapley Peebles, her husbands, Henry Weldon May and Thomas J. Cowart and daughter, Nell May.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Dot May Coleman and David F. Coleman of Macon; a stepdaughter, Ann Farrar of Swainsboro; a son and daughter-in-law, James H. "Buddy" and Betty Jo May of Swainsboro; a stepson and daughter-in-law, Jim and Ann Cowart of Ridgeland, S.C. nine grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren

Pallbearers were Thomas Sconyers, Ted Sconyers, Lance Avant, James Cowart, Jimmy May and Jason May. Honorary pallbearers were the TELJoy Faithful Workers Sunday School Class.

Richard M. Garrard, 57

SWAINSBORO,--Funeral for Richard M. "Ricky" Garrard, 57, was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 27, 2007 at Lincolnton United Methodist Church with Rev. John M. "Dusty" Rhodes and Rev. Dave Hinson officiating. Burial was in the Lincolnton City Cemetery. He died Saturday, March 24, 2007 at Emanuel Medical Center in Swainsboro.

Mr. Garrard was the son of the late Reuben and Grace Garrard. He had lived most of his life in Lincoln County before moving into the Royal Oaks Retirement Home in Adrian. He was preceded in death by his sister, Barbara G. Lyons.

Survivors include a niece, Michele Lyons Roberts of Swainsboro; brother-in-law, Robert P. "Bob" Lyons of Adrian; and several cousins.

Pallbearers were Dwaine Biggerstaff, Charles Estes, George Leverett, III, Billy Norman, Dee Turner and Charles Ware.
