SHS tennis: Girls capture two, boys one

Swainsboro High School tennis team hosted T. W. Josey on the East Georgia College campus on Tuesday, March 6. Both the boys and girls teams impressed the crowd with one-sided play. Danielle Farthing and Rachel McNeely won their singles matches very decisively as neither gave up a game. The doubles team of Gena Garrett/Haley Lawson rolled over their opponents also. The singles match between Livia Morris and her opponent was a very long and entertaining match, as it lasted a couple of hours with Morris coming out on top 7-6, 6-4. The girls won the 2nd doubles match by default.

The boys' Tiger team came out on top since Josey brought only two players. Ty Gillis and Javier Nealy waxed both their opponents in singles and the other three matches for the boys were won by default.

On Thursday, March 8, the Tigers traveled to Augusta and played Westside High at the Newman Tennis Center. The girls' team remained undefeated by coming out on top with two doubles wins and one singles win for the night. The team of Gena Garrett/Haley Lawson won over Hardi/ Harwoods 6-3, 6-3 and the team of Erin Garrett/ Lacey London won over O'Bryant/Wooford 6-2, 6-4. Livia Morris and Danielle Farthing came out on the short end with close losses for each singles match. Rachel Mc- Neely's singles match was the decisive match to determine the team victory and McNeely came through with solid consistency in a 6-3, 6-3 win over Bianca Sims.

Westside came out the victors over the boys decision but several of the matches went down to tiebreakers. Due to time, tiebreakers were played after splitting sets. Ty Gillis lost to Bailey 1-6, 6- 3 and 5-10 in the tiebreaker. Javier Nealy lost to Thomas 2-6, 4-6. Michael Chrysosferedis lost a very close match to Barrett with a score of 6-7, 4-6. Quez Watson was edged out by Lewis 6-7, 7-6 with a tiebreaker of 5- 10.

In boys' doubles action the team of Phillip Schwabe/Brett Beneteau won a thrilling tight match over the team of Barrett/Davis with a score of 5-7, 6-1 and the tiebreaker being 10-7. And the last boys' doubles team of Tyler Youmans/Drake Oglesby lost to Williams/Aaron 1- 6, 2-6. The boys are still up 2-1 in wins and losses for the season.

The scheduled March 15 match against Laney in Augusta has been cancelled.
