Roberts receives 'Georgia's Peach of an Athlete' award

Shayla Roberts, a senior forward on the Lady Broncos basketball team at Fayetteville State University in Fayetteville, N.C., has been selected as one of Georgia's 2007 "Peach of an Athlete." Her selection was made by the Atlanta Area Council Boy Scouts of America for her outstanding achievement in and out of the athletic arena where she exemplifies the qualities of a great "Role Model" for the youths in the community.

Roberts, an English literature major and a native of Swainsboro, is a two-year starter with the Lady Broncos basketball team. Roberts will be recognized at the Atlanta Area Council's 24th Annual Awards Banquet on Thursday, April 26 at the Grand Ballroom of the Cobb Galleria Centre in Atlanta.

To qualify for the honor, Roberts had to be a student-athlete of character and serve as a positive role model for youths, embody the principal of scouting which includes character, citizenship and personal fitness, be an athlete from Georgia or participating for a college or university in Georgia, excel in academics, and hold at least a 2.5 cumulative grade point average. Roberts currently holds a 3.6 GPA.

She is a 2003 honor graduate of Swainsboro High School. She played four years of high school basketball at Swainsboro High and received the MVP during the 2002 and 2003 school years. She is the daughter of Yvette and Paul Mercer of Swainsboro.
