Lady Eagles advance to Final Four

JESSICA COOK
The David Emanuel Academy Lady Eagles advanced to the GISA Final Four for the first time in school history by winning the first and second round games of the state basketball tournament last week. DEA defeated Oak Mountain Academy 28-23 on Wednesday and John Hancock Academy 39-29 on Friday at East Georgia College.

DEA, 18-10, will play undefeated and number one ranked Terrell Academy, 24-0, at 2:30 on Thursday at the Centennial Center on the campus of Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville. Citizens Christian and LaGrange Academy will square off in the other semifinal game which will be played at 1:00 on Thursday. The state championship game is set for 12 noon on Saturday.

"Getting to the Final Four was one of our team goals," said Coach Andy Callaway. "Not many gave us a chance to get here. But we have worked hard and believed in what we are doing and this is the result of that."

The round one win over Oak Mountain, the number two team coming out of region 4-A, was led by Macy Fagler's 10 points and 18 rebounds. Jessica Cook had 10 points also and she grabbed seven boards. Amanda Cardell had five points and six rebounds while Gabrielle Story scored three points.

In the second round win over John Hancock, the number one team out of region 1-A, Fagler poured in 19 points and Amanda Cardell netted a career high 15 points, including three shots from behind the arc, as the Lady Eagles avenged a second round loss to the Lady Rebels in last year's second round game. Amy Wells had two points while Jessica Cook, Chatonna Powell and Gabrielle Story each had one point.

"I thought that the play of our three senior starters made the difference in both of those games," said Callaway. "Macy and Jessica have been solid for us all year and Amanda has really stepped up her game in the final two weeks of the regular season and during the post season. Our defense has been a key also. Anytime that you can hold quality opponents to under 30 points you give yourself an excellent chance to win."

Now it is on to the state semifinals and a match with the number one ranked team in the state. "Terrell has an excellent team and this is a tremendous challenge for us. We play in a very tough region and hopefully that will prepare us for what we will see on Thursday. We have three days of practice to get ready and we will work as hard as we can to get ready," said Callaway.
