DEAR EDITOR:

I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to our school system's technology instructors. I don't think they get enough credit for what they have to deal with in today's technological world.

Last week, Mrs. Jodi Kersey, the technology instructor at Twin City Elementary, put together an Internet Safety Information Meeting for parents, grandparents, teachers and caregivers who work with children using computers. This meeting was very informative concerning risks and responsibilities in the use of technology. Parents were made aware of how to be alert of the risks of using a computer and suggestions were made to help ensure your child's safety while using the computer's Internet, chat rooms, blogs, etc. and even cell phones! I was surprised that only a handful of parents attended this very informative meeting.

Are we aware of what our children are faced with on a day to day basis in real life, not to mention the world of dangers that are right in front of them every time they sit down to a computer? At school and at home? Most kids today are more advanced on a computer than we, the parents, are. This is a scary thought! Do we know what they are doing on the computer or with their cell phones? We need to stay informed and keep lines of communication open with our children. That is what this meeting covered. We, the parents, need to support our school's information meetings and support our instructors while at the same time, know the risks that our children face because of improper use of modern technology.

For those of you with concerns about computers and children, Jodi recorded the program and she along with other staff members are always ready and willing to help us with any questions we may have. A big THANK YOU goes to you Jodi, and to everyone else in our school system that tries very hard to keep us up to date with all the modern technology available! DEBRA HENRY Twin City
