Tyson Stephens, deputies responded Sunday night, Feb. 25 around 10 p.m. to a 911 emergency call on Fairground Road where a suspect was shooting at his neighbor's house. The suspect, identified as Charles Coxwell, 48, was firing a rifle across the street at his neighbor's house, trapping five victims inside. When officers arrived, the shooting continued. With the help of SPD Officer Heidi Hall and Trooper David Lawrence, Sheriff's Sergeants Marc Curry and Juan Yepe managed to evacuate the trapped residents while bullets whizzed around them. As more officers arrived on the scene, including Sheriff Deputies, Troopers, Swainsboro Police Officers, and East Central Georgia Drug Task Force Agents, Coxwell was located at his residence across the street. Sheriff Stephens used a loudspeaker to communicate with Coxwell as he walked around with a weapon in his hand. Sheriff Stephens convinced the armed man to put down his weapon and move into a lighted area. Coxwell was taken into custody without further incident and transported for mental evaluation. Warrants are currently pending on Coxwell, including aggravated assault on an officer, aggravated assault and attempted home invasion (burglary).
