DEAR EDITOR:

I can remember clearly how sad I was when an employee of the Winn-Dixie told me that the store in Swainsboro was going to close. (The new Bi-Lo was about to open). In time, Swainsboro also lost the Piggly Wiggly store. Bi-Lo became as familiar to me as the long lost Winn-Dixie had been and losing it was just as sad.

On Jan. 16, I bought a cartload of groceries at the new Super Wal-Mart. After I arrived home, I discovered an error on the sales slip. I had three small pieces of broccoli crown that should have been weighed and sold by the pound, but I had been charged for three bunches of broccoli at $2.17 each. Two weeks went by before I got back to Wal-Mart, but I went to customer service confident that I could get a fair settlement. Those three little pieces equaled about one bunch so I would have been happy with a refund for two of them. But they refused to give me anything because I no longer had the original items. I asked to see the manager and they told me that he was not there. The next day, I tried phoning the number that was printed on the grocery slip. The phone rang about seven times and then turned into a busy signal.

I went onto the Internet, typed "Wal-Mart complaint" in the My Search bar and clicked Google. Twenty-nine seconds later I had 77,900 results--everybody is angry with Wal- Mart and probably have reasons as good or even better than mine.

After the Wal-Mart customer service refused to give me a refund, I decided to buy my groceries from another store, knowing that the profits that they lose will soon be many times what my refund should have been. I went to Harvey's that day. I found them remodeling and moving things around but the produce was very good, I found nice loaves of store brand "old-fashioned" bread for 99 cents, the line at cashier was very short and there was someone to carry groceries to my car. I certainly hope that this store remains in Swainsboro. D.C. TOWNSEND Kite
