DEAR EDITOR: I was very pleased that the County Commissioners recently named the old courthouse square Patriot Square. Not only are 118 military servicemen memorialized there but several law enforcement personnel as well who died in the line of duty. They are among our greatest patriots. I agree with Keith Thompson's sentiments that "patriots" could be anyone. It is mainly a term we use in admiration for anyone who puts community and others above themselves. Patriot Square allows us to focus on something much bigger than any of us as mere individuals. It honors many citizens who have dedicated a large part of their lives to making things better for all of us in so many ways. Coincidentally, the palm trees provide a reminder for us all that many of our "greatest generation" served in the South Pacific. The palm trees are a fitting reminder of Pearl Harbor, Iwo Jima, Okinawa, Leyte Gulf and other places where the blood of many Americans is now part of the soil and waters of those battlefields. I hope that we can all realize the vision behind the sacrifices of those who defeated the tyranny of enemies past. By the way, there are also palm trees in Iraq and other places in the Middle East. We all hope for the day when we have peace on earth. Sadly, young Americans have often been called upon to help others overcome tyrannical regimes or respond to global threats to regional or international security. I think it would be nice if we could erect a nice statue of our county's namesake, David Emanuel. He was a Revolutionary War patriot from nearby Burke County. We could also commemorate the ancestors of Emanuel Countians who fought for our independence. The DAR has the information. AL JONES Commander American Legion Post 103
