DEAR EDITOR:

On Jan. 4, we received a call from on of the police officers who had found 10 puppies at a dumpster. We made arrangements to meet him at the Animal Shelter. When he arrived with them, I was expecting them to be about 6 weeks old or older, but they were newborns. I don't understand how anyone could leave something so helpless in a box to die. I guess they soothed their conscience by thinking someone will come along and take them. These puppies are the lucky ones. Someone did find them. Most are not so lucky.

After receiving the puppies we started to worry about bottling them. How long had they been without milk? Would they suck a bottle? Then we thought about the mother dog we had. Would she accept them? We carried them into a pen of the mother dog and to our great joy, she nuzzled and licked them as if they were hers. The problem of bottling was solved. This sweet Golden Retriever mother accepted these orphaned babies as her own. It's a sad thing that a four-legged creature showed more love and compassion to these puppies than the two-legged individual who dumped them.

It's bad enough to dump older puppies and dogs, but these are newborns that are dependent on their mother's milk for survival. This is not the first time something like this has happened. Last year, someone brought four newborn puppies that had been thrown out at a dumpster. We have some heartless people in our community. If you don't want your dog or cat to have babies, have them spayed or neutered.

I would like to say a big "thank you" to all of you who have rescued, fed, cared for and loved a homeless animal. The world needs more people like you. May God bless you for your kindness. SHARI WATT Swainsboro
