DEA Eagles bounce back after loss
The win on Friday was a hard fought battle with Providence Christian at the P.B. Edwards gym in Port Wentworth. After a night of lead changes, controversial calls, some outstanding individual play, and the ejection of DEA Coach Stacy Sikes, DEA came away with a 64-59 win. Four Eagles scored in double figures led by Jared Flowers who netted 18 points and pulled down 11 rebounds. Logan Salter tossed in 14 points and grabbed eight boards while handing out six assists. Dawda Njie and Clifford Byrd each finished with 11 points and Njie also pulled 11 rebounds. Greg Glover with six points and Joseph Sparks with four points completed the Eagle scoring. "We had a very balanced scoring night with four starters hitting double figures which makes the other teams have to work hard on defense," said DEA Coach Stacy Sikes. "Coming down the stretch our free throw shooting came around and that made a big difference in the outcome of the game." DEA returned to their home court on Saturday and cruised to a 70-29 win over Nathanael Greene. Dawda Njie tossed in 18 points including three dunks of the highlight variety that made their way to WTOC's dunks of the night feature. Njie also pulled 13 rebounds and dished out six assists despite playing less than three quarters of the game. Clifford Byrd with 16 points, Logan Salter with 11 and Joseph Sparks with 10 also reached double digits in scoring. Jared Flower with eight, Brandon Blount with five and Casey Clark with two also scored for DEA in the win. Jimmy Easley led the Patriots with 11 points. "Again we had four out of five starters hit double digits in scoring and that is what I like to see as a coach," said Sikes "Dawda Njie really set the tone for this game early with three dunks on the break. When he does that our whole team feeds off of that emotion and everyone picks up their game." The Eagles first loss of the season was at the hands of Bethesda Day School least Tuesday in Savannah. Alonzo Shields, the reigning WTOC Player of the Week, nailed a 25 foot three pointer with five seconds left to give the Blazers their only lead of the second half in a 52-51 win. Logan Salter was the only Eagle to score in double figures as he tossed in 14 points. Clifford Byrd had nine points while Joseph Sparks tossed in eight, Jared Flowers, Dawda Njie and Greg Glover all finished with six and Casey Clark added two. Njie had eight rebounds and five blocked shots despite sitting a good portion of the game in foul trouble. Terry Roberts led all scorers with 35 points for the Blazers. "It was just one of those nights that every basketball team has at some point of the season," Sikes said. "We had way too many turnovers and played a little uninspired. We did an excellent job in defending the Shields kid, but in doing so we let one of their other key players get too many points in the paint." It's something that will build character for us and make us a better team in the end." In a B-team contest it was DEA edging Providence Christian 26-25 behind Hudson Johnson's ten points. Ryan Sparks tossed in nine and Joseph Powell finished with seven. Allen Tanner led all scorers with 12 for Providence. The Eagles will travel to Douglas to play Citizens Christian this Friday and to Statesboro on Saturday to play Bulloch Academy in a non-region game with the boy's game starting at approximately 8 p.m. on both days. DEA will be at home for the rematch with Bethesda on Tuesday, Jan. 30 with tipoff set for 6:30.
