Dr. David Dudley, head of the Department of English and Philosophy at Georgia Southern University, visited the 10th grade college preparatory English students at Emanuel County Institute as a part of a study of Harper Lee's novel To Kill a Mockingbird. Students requested Dr. Dudley to speak on the period because of his book The Bicycle Man. To Kill a Mockingbird is set in rural Alabama during the Great Depression of the 1930's, and The Bicycle Man is set in Twin City a few years before that time.

Dr. Dudley explained to students the implications of Jim Crow laws and the societal norms of the period. He challenged the students with a quote: "A time is marked not so much by ideas that are argued about as by ideas that are taken for granted. The character of an era hangs on what needs no defense."

Additionally, students were able to view a manuscript of Dr. Dudley's book complete with editing notations for the publisher. He explained the process through which books are written, published and marketed to the public. He also stressed the importance of reading and composition in being successful in the college classroom.

Mrs. Suzanne Jarvis teaches the students who will now complete a variety of cultural/societal projects on issues addressed in their study.
