Top ranked DEA remains undefeated
The Eagles scored early and often, mainly with their transition game fueled by a tough man-toman defense and near domination on the glass. DEA held the visitors to 18 per cent shooting and pulled down 46 rebounds in the game. At the half they led 56-13. "I am very happy with the way our kids responded after not playing their best the night before," said Eagle Coach Stacy Sikes. "I thought that our post players did a great job defending their big kid (6'7"). Offensively we were very unselfish with the ball on the break, something we work hard on in practice. I cannot ask much more of them on either end of the court." The unselfishness showed in the box score as nearly everyone contributed. Three Eagles reached double figure scoring led by junior guard Joseph Sparks who tossed in 24 followed by Clifford Byrd with 20. Logan Salter, who finished with 17 points, had the best overall final line as he also grabbed 15 rebounds, had seven steals, handed out four assists, and threw down two dunks. Byrd led the team with six assists while Dawda Njie pulled down 11 rebounds and had six points. Greg Glover (five), Casey Clark (four), Brandon Blount (four), Jared Flowers (two) and John Mark Sweat (two) all scored in the win also. The win over AHS followed a lackluster performance on Friday night when the Eagles held off a winless, but determined Curtis Baptist squad by a 48-32 count at the DEA gymnasium. "We were really not hitting on all cylinders after the long holiday break, but I give plenty of credit to Curtis Baptist for their defensive effort," said Coach Sikes. "I am proud that we found a way to win even though we were not on our game." One glaring area of concern for the Eagles was at the free throw line where DEA hit just 12 out of 29 attempts. "We cannot afford to shoot free throws at the rate we are now' said Sikes. "We missed 17 free throws tonight. That will haunt us in a close game if we do not show dramatic improvement soon," said Coach Sikes. Casey Clark led the Eagles in scoring with 13 points. He also pulled down eight rebounds. Dawda Njie and Logan Salter both finished with a double figure in two categories as Njie had 10 points and 13 rebounds while Salter had 11 points and 10 boards. Njie also blocked four shots and had four steals. Clifford Byrd with six points, Jared Flowers with four points and Joseph Sparks and Greg Glover with two each also scored in the win.
