Gallery RFD opens

On Saturday, Jan. 13, an exhibition of mailed artwork created by amateur and professional artists will be featured in Swainsboro's newest art gallery, Gallery RFD. The exhibition includes artwork by hundreds of artists from all over the United States. Artists were asked to create work on envelopes and other materials to send through the postal service.

Mailed artwork of different sizes and shapes were sent to the gallery over the course of a five week call for entries. Some artwork may have even baffled the postmaster. "One of our most creative pieces was a part of a mailbox with a stamp on it," RFD Education Director Anthony Faris explains. "We were surprised at some of the things that you can send through the mail system--in the name of art."

The exhibition was inspired in part of the gallery's name, RFD or Rural Free Delivery. Rural Free Delivery was a system advocated by the Grange Movement in the 1800's to have the postal service deliver mail directly to rural residents. "We want to promote better communication within rural communities. This show has people writing, painting, and drawing ideas that are sent to Swainsboro to be read, seen, and talked about. That's really what this show is about," says Exhibitions Director Bryan Ghiloni.

Student artwork from East Georgia College, Swainsboro High School and local residents play a big part in the show. "We really hope the community comes out to celebrate the arts in Emanuel County since a lot of them created work for this show," said Faris. The Gallery opening will be held in conjunction with an Art Stroll and three other art openings at Emanuel Arts Council, Jack's Java Cove and Brantley's Billiards. Area businesses around the square will be open from 6 -9 p.m. to support Gallery RFD's opening with special deals that include free gifts with purchases of $25 off special services.

Gallery RFD is located at 106 North Green Street in the Mary's Building. The exhibition is casual dress and free to the public. RFD is supported by GREDC, Emanuel Arts Council, East Georgia College and Swainsboro- Emanuel County Chamber of Commerce. The exhibition will be until the first week of February.
