Message from the Mayor
Economically, we have managed to attract Huber Engineered Woods to our community, which promises exciting things for our area in the coming months and years. We also look forward to the opening of Vista Windows and R and F Marketing in the first quarter of 2007. Both plant locations are now under construction. In other areas of our community, such as East Georgia College and Emanuel Medical Center, new expansion projects are now underway or have just seen completion. Emanuel County Schools and Swainsboro Tech continue to grow and improve and consistently earn awards for their level of instruction. It is a great source of pride to me that all this progress comes about through the combined efforts of so many people and organizations. City government is hard at work every day to support this drive for progress, not only in job creation but in diligently working to provide the best services we can to each citizen at the lowest cost. I can report to you today that your tax dollar is not spent unwisely by City Hall. City government operates very leanly and oftentimes cuts have to be made. We have faced some hard decisions this year, but ones that urgently required action and will ultimately mean lower expenses for the City. Changes have been made in many areas and some long-standing problems are now being confronted. I am sure you are already aware this new policy of tackling old problems has necessitated a very slight increase in city taxes. It is my conviction that careful planning and discipline in all our departments is ultimately the only way to effectively control rising costs. To this end, all of the City Department Heads are now conducting an up and down audit of their respective areas in conjunction with monthly narratives on department operations. I appreciate the efforts of these Department Heads in conducting these reviews. Swainsboro has made great strides this year. And it is not my plan to watch 2007 come and go without many, many more great things happening in our city. I hope you will agree with me that this town is worth the investment of our time and hope and energy. I thank all of you who work in your own way to make this a better place. There are hundreds of our citizens who find ways through churches, civic groups, neighborhood groups and school organizations to make this a better community. I urge you to find your own way and work to make your hometown a better place for us all. There is much to be done. Thank you again for the honor of serving as Mayor. We will continue to work for the safety and prosperity of this town, and I encourage your comments and suggestions. I hope you and your family have a wonderful holiday season and, on behalf of all City employees and staff, please accept our wishes for a very happy and safe Christmas and New Year.
