Fagler leads DEA past Edmund Burke Macy Fagler pumped in 20 points to lead David Emanuel Academy to a 40-26 win over Edmund Burke Academy in a nonregion Georgia Independent School Association game last Friday night in Waynesboro. With the win, DEA improved to 3-2 while EBA fell to 1-3. “Anytime that you can go on the road and get a win, you have to be happy with that,” said DEA Coach Andy Callaway. “We were coming off of a tough overtime loss on Tuesday night so we were all feeling a lot better after this one.” Jessica Cook netted 13 points for DEA while Amanda Cardell tossed in five and Chatonna Powell scored two. Katie Kittrell led the Lady Spartans with 13 points. The game was tied at 19 going into halftime. In the final two periods, the Eagles held Edmund Burke to seven points and only two made shots from the floor. “We did a good job of pressuring them with our zone press and also getting back down the floor to protect the basket when we need to. Our backline players in our 2-3 zone, Macy Fagler, Jessica Cook, Chatonna Powell and Casey Claxton, all were outstanding on the boards in not allowing many second chance opportunities. The defensive effort in the second half along with better shot selection down the stretch proved to be the difference,” said Callaway. The loss referred to earlier was a 59-58 setback at the hands of visiting Bulloch Academy. The Lady Eagles trailed by as many as ten in the second half before rallying to take a four point lead in the final period. A foul in the backcourt with less than ten seconds remaining led to a two shot bonus situation for Bulloch that tied the game. Then in overtime the Lady Eagles turned the ball over while leading by one in play that gave the Lady Gators the winning shot under the basket with just three seconds remaining. “Our effort was fantastic but our decision making was not very good at the end. Bulloch played a great game and they deserve the credit. I didn’t do a very good job of communicating what need to be done at the end so this one is on me,” said Callaway. Jessica Cook poured in 24 points to lead all scorers for DEA. Macy Fagler tossed in 17 points while Amy Wells with six, Chatonna Powell with four, Amanda Cardell with three, Jessica Wimberly with two and Laura Cardell and Gabrielle Story with one each rounded out the Lady Eagle scoring. Kaylee Lanier with 14 points, Kacie Lanier with 11 points and Addie Reddick with 10 all hit double figures for Bulloch Academy in the marathon affair that saw 93 attempted free throws by the two teams. In the earlier B-team game, the two schools battled to a 23-23 tie. Gabrielle Story led all scorers with 14 points for DEA. Brittany McNure with four, Blythe Morgan and Cheyenne Duckworth with two each and Courtney Johnson with one all scored also for DEA who outscored BA 9-0 in the fourth quarter to tie the game. Kelcie Jacobs led Bulloch with five points. In an abbreviated game on Friday, the DEA B-team girls lost a 15-8 contest at Edmund Burke. Courtney Johnson scored five of the DEA team total with Blythe Morgan (two) and Brittany McNure (one) accounting for the rest. Kayla Mulligan led all scorers with eight points for EBA. The varsity Lady Eagles return to the hardwood on Tuesday December 19 when they host John Hancock Academy at 6:00 in a rematch of last year’s state quarterfinal match up. The next B-tem girls game will be versus Edmund Burke on January 2.
