DEAR EDITOR: I recently spent five days at Emanuel Medical Center following surgical repair of a broken kneecap. The first two RNs who appeared in my room had been my students at East Georgia College. One of the LPNs who helped me had also been my student. I liked being cared for by someone who knew me. Because I had known these women as freshmen, it was a real pleasure to know they had achieved their professional goal and that I had played a small part in their success. It also made me proud of my role at East Georgia College where students from our area may begin their college career. East Georgia College has recently begun a nursing program in collaboration with Darton College of Albany. Having been a patient, I now understand better the work that nurses do and the ways their care is important. I have also learned that those late night, early-morning hours are the most difficult for patients. The professional staff and nurses at Emanuel Medical Center were typically helpful, but there are two nurses I will always remember. One of the two, Ronnie, rubbed my back twice one night and then again a second night. She had large hands and used them well. It was wonderful. The second, a nurse named Ashley, and her helper washed my hair at 3 a.m. That was Ashley's spontaneous response to my observation that I was sure I'd feel better if my hair were fresh and clean. I was totally surprised and shall always remember her unexpected kindness. Several days ago I said to a neighbor that I had been genuinely touched by all the ways people had been thoughtful, kind and helpful. Her response was, "Swainsboro's that way." Thank you to everyone who has helped me heal. SUELLA MCCRIMMON Assistant Professor of Mathematics East Georgia College
