Norton to speak at EGC commencement
The commencement speaker will be EGC's Assistant Professor of Education and Physical Education Lara Norton. She was selected by a vote of EGC students to be the commencement speaker for fall semester 2006. Last fall the students selected Dr. Alan Brasher, associate professor of English at the college, as the faculty commencement speaker. Born in Valdosta, Norton earned her Bachelor of Science in Health and Physical Education, her Masters of Education, and her Education Specialist in Education Leadership from Georgia Southern University. While at Georgia Southern, she served as a graduate teaching assistant in physical education. Prior to joining the faculty of East Georgia College in 2002, Norton was an adjunct faculty member at Georgia Military College, where she taught physical education, health, and fitness. She has also served as a physical education instructor at Johnson County Elementary School, Truett McConnell College, Washington- Wilkes Middle School and Toombs County High School. Norton has also taught special education, track and cross country running, and cheerleading, while serving as the head coach. During her five years at East Georgia College, Norton has developed several online courses, proposed and taught new courses including aerobics, intermediate aerobics, and introduction to jogging courses, and serves as site coordinator for the Destination Teaching Program. This program allows special education para-professionals to receive a teaching certificate through fast track means such as online classes and flexible scheduling of classes. At EGC, she is a member of the faculty auxiliary enterprises, advisement steering, program review, athletics mascot, and orientation fun day committees. She is also a member of the Academy for Learning through Performance and Standards and Assessment team at EGC, which supports other faculty members in their implementation and refinement of p e r f o r m a n c e - b a s e d teacher preparation programs using performance assessments. She also serves as the Student Association of Georgia Educators advisor, Student Success advisor, and designed and developed a cross country course on the campus of East Georgia College, where local High School Region Cross Country Championships have been hosted by the college. Norton was presented the Georgia Southern University Physical Education Major of the Year Award in 1991-1992. She also was awarded the University of Georgia Honorarium for the SPECTRUM grant program (Special Education Training on the Web: Certification, Undergraduate, and Mentoring) in 2005. She is a member of the Professional Association of Georgia Educators; the American Alliance of Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance; the American Red Cross; and the American Fitness Association of America. Norton's community service includes: Beta Sigma Phi member, Swainsboro Primary School Advisory Council member, Johnson County High School Touchdown Club member, Swainsboro Primary School Parent Teacher Organization member, Swainsboro Primary School Advisory Board member, Swainsboro Elementary School Parent Teacher Organization member, and the Emanuel County Special Olympics Volunteer. Norton and her husband, Don, defensive coordinator and assistant head coach at Johnson County High School, have two children, Kayelin and Brooks.
