Council discusses New Street
By JACQUIE BRASHER

Swainsboro city council discussed at some length the continuing problems on New Street. Police Chief Johnny Shuman said that police officers have been on patrol there during night shifts due to the constant complaints of unsavory activity at all hours of the night. The area, which also includes Jerome Street, is littered with trash, most of which constitutes beer bottles.

City Councilmember Rita Faulkner said that something must be done to ensure the safety of the older citizens who live in the area. "This is America," she said. "We have a right to feel safe in our own homes."

Fire Chief Mike Strobridge said that he was born and reared in the Flanders Heights area which has deteriorated through the years. He told council that he owns property in the area and encounters at least three break-ins a year. He said the area used to be a respectable neighborhood when he was a child, but has since become an eyesore and a dangerous place to live.

Council members also discussed the fact that most of the trouble originates at a particular nightclub in the neighborhood that has been in operation for years. Chief Shuman told Mayor Charles Schwabe that the club was allowed to operate there many years ago despite the fact that it is located in a residential area. He suggested seeking Supreme Court action to declare the business a "nuisance" to get it shut down. Mayor Schwabe asked Chief Shuman and Councilmember Faulkner to study the problem further.

In other business, council:

Congratulated Barnell Anderson on his 60 years of service to the city. Anderson received a Plaque of Appreciation from Keep Emanuel Beautiful.

Approved a contract with Georgia Municipal Association to turn over delinquent water and sewer accounts to a collection agency.

Approved the application for beer and wine package only at Wal- Mart. (The store has a new manager.)

Authorized the Fire Department Committee to hire two new firefighters.

The next council meeting will be Jan. 8, 2007.
