DEA downs LaGrange in season opener
By ANDY CALLAWAY

Basketball season got underway at David Emanuel Academy on a winning note as the Eagles took a 66-49 win over La- Grange Academy in the Coaches versus Cancer tournament at Robert Toombs on Monday November 20.

The Eagles, with only four available practice days following the completion of football, trailed 28-26 at the half before switching from a 2-3 zone to a full court man-to-man defense for the final sixteen minutes.

"At times we looked like a team that had only a week of practice," said first year head coach Stacy Sikes. "When we asked them to go out and play man-to-man the second half they just went out and gave a great effort despite the fact that we have not had enough conditioning. I was really pleased with the way they responded."

Joseph Sparks led the Eagles in scoring with 19 points coming off the bench. Clifford Byrd tossed in 14 points, including a pair of key three pointers, in the Eagles second half surge while recording nine steals and handing out five assists. Logan Salter joined Sparks and Byrd in double figures with 10 points. Dawda Njie with eight points, Greg Glover with six points, Casey Clark with five points and Brandon Blount with four points all scored for the Eagles also. For Coach Sikes, the first

graduate of DEA to be the boys head basketball coach at his alma mater, it was a milestone with his first win in his first game at the helm. "I'm really just glad that it's behind us," Sikes said afterwards. "It's a felling that I can't really describe. I can tell you that the players are the ones that deserve the credit because they did all the work on the floor."

The Eagles will return to action on Tuesday December 5 when they host Bulloch Academy following the varsity girls game that tips off at 6:30.

"We will continue to work on all aspects of our defense and also begin to employ our offensive system," said Sikes about the preparation time leading up to the next game.
