Lady Eagles off to 2-1 start
By ANDY CALLAWAY

The David Emanuel Academy Lady Eagles are off to a 2-1 start in the 2006- 07 after participating in two pre-season tournaments. After losing to defending South Carolina Independent school champion St Andrews 39-25 in the opening round of the Lady Gator Classic, the Lady Eagles defeated Frederica 40-32 in the Coaches versus Cancer tournament at Robert Toombs before cruising by Thomas Jefferson 37-24 in the consolation game of the Lady Gator Classic at Bulloch.

"We are happy to pick up a couple of wins early in the season," said Coach Andy Callaway. "But we are still a long way from being where we need to be, especially with our half court offense."

Macy Fagler scored 13 points in the loss to St Andrews and pumped in 24 points in the win over Frederica. Her seven point effort gave her a three game total of 44 points.

"Macy is in her fourth year as a starter and she is very good basketball player. We rely heavily on her performance and leadership. When she plays well we feel like that we have an excellent chance of winning," said Callaway.

Amanda Cardell scored four points while Jessica Cook and Chatonna Powell each had three and Jessica Wimberly had two points in the game versus St Andrews. Mary Wilkowski with 16 points and Rose Wilkowski with 15 points led the Lady Saints.

Jessica Cook scored seven points and Chatonna Powell had four in the win over Frederica. Bonnie Mc- Neely and Casey Claxton had two points and Amanda Cardell added one for DEA. Natalie Ortiz and Melinda Morales each had seven to lead Frederica.

Casey Claxton sparked the win over Thomas Jefferson with a nine point effort coming off the bench. Jessica Cook led the Lady Eagles with 12 points while Chatonna Powell with four, Amanda Cardell with three and Laura Cardell with two rounded out the DEA scoring. Morgan Bridges led all scorers with 15 for Thomas Jefferson.

"Our press has been really effective for us so far," said Callaway. "Coach Tony Thompson joined our staff this year and he has helped us by adding the zone press as part of our package. We are forcing more turnovers and creating more scoring opportunities as a result."

DEA will return to the hardwood on December 5 when they host Bulloch Academy at 6:30. The Bteam games will begin at 4:00 on that day.
