DEAR EDITOR:

On the day before Thanksgiving, Swainsboro welcomed home members of our local National Guard Unit from a year's duty in Iraq. The ceremony was attended by people from throughout the area along with the Adjutant General of Georgia National Guard, Gen. David Poythress and many other officers. The ceremony was well organized by Sgt. Shateen of the local unit and was very impressive. To witness the reunion of these returning troops was an emotional and inspiring event.

I was proud of these returning soldiers and also of the way the city of Swainsboro welcomed them home. I would like to thank Marie Wofford of Emanuel County School System for her help in arranging the Color Guard and bands from area schools. These students did a wonderful job.

I would also like to acknowledge the help of the Chamber of Commerce in encouraging attendance as well as the Sheriff's Office and Police Department who escorted the military buses. Lastly, I would like to

thank the citizens of Swainsboro who stood on roadsides to welcome the buses as they drove into town. Gen. Poythress told me that this welcome in Swainsboro was the most joyous one he had attended anywhere in Georgia for returning troops.

On the day before Thanksgiving and less than two weeks after Veterans Day, Swainsboro did itself proud in warmly supporting the sacrifice and service of our citizensoldiers. CHARLES SCHWABE Mayor, City of Swainsboro
