'Keep the Flame Burning' program held by DAR
Dr. Jean B. Bridges, chapter regent, welcomed members, guests, and veterans. She also recognized Mrs. Susan Merrill, past chapter regent. Regent Bridges presided, opened the meeting, and led the assembly with the DAR ritual, pledge to the United States flag, salute to the Georgia flag, the DAR pledge, and The American's Creed. The colors were posted by members of the Swainsboro High School ROTC. Regent Bridges read the first and last verses of The Star-Spangled Banner. Mrs. Mary Shepherd, vice regent, introduced our guest speaker, Sgt. Richard Bridges, ROTC Instructor at Swainsboro High School. Sgt. Bridges retired in 1999 from the United States Army with 22 years of service. He has been an ROTC instructor at Swainsboro High School for the last four years. Sgt. Bridges informed the assembly that the mission of ROTC is to help the cadets become better citizens. The cadets serve as honor guard, color guard, support the high school and the community, and participate in parades, both in Swainsboro and other communities. A short business meeting followed the program. Upon the conclusion of the program and business meeting, Regent Bridges asked members, guests, and veterans to join her in the foyer of the library for the lighting of the "Keep the Flame Burning Tree". The tree was decorated with red, white, and blue lights, American flags, and bells. The bells contained the names of men and women who have served our country from the American Revolution to the current war in Iraq. In a moment of silence and reverence following the lighting of the tree, taps were played on an authentic military bugle by William T. Sasser. Following the lighting of the tree veterans were asked to assemble around the tree for photos. Guests were invited to enjoy a variety of delicious refreshments and punch prepared by our hostesses for the meeting - Mrs. Eddie Kay Lewis, Mrs. Emily Mason, Mrs. Susan Merrill, Mrs. Glynda Sasser, Mrs. Elmira Black, and Mrs. Deene Youngblood. The next meeting is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 16. Members will leave Swainsboro at 9:45 a.m. for a trip to Meadow Garden, Augusta, Georgia, for lunch and a tour. Meadow Garden is the historic farm home of George Walton. Co-hostesses will be Nita Livingston and Angie Russell.
