Landfill contamination may be from outside source Kathy Stege, project engineer for Emanuel County in the Hwy. 80 landfill study, told commissioners Monday night that the source of contamination at the landfill may be from an outside source. According to Stege, preliminary studies have yielded this "unanticipated information" and she proposed an hourly project study to done. Stege told commissioners that the theory had initially been that material was washing into the ground from the landfill. However, she said surface pit samples did not confirm this assumption. Rather, said Stege, contamination was being found on the perimeter of the landfill, causing some speculation that it may be coming from upstream. Stege said more research needed to be done and that she would have "some answers" for the board in about two months. (The Hwy. 80 landfill has been on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency list since 1986.) A public hearing concerning the application for a license to sell beer and wine at a proposed establishment at 734 Summit Avenue was canceled. Application was withdawn. In other business, commissioners approved: A resolution approving the 2006 Georgia Recreation Trails program Grant application to construct a walking trail in the city of Oak Park. A contract between the city of Swainsboro and Ellis Wood Contracting of Statesboro for improvements at Swainsboro-Emanuel County Airport. The leasing of two 12-H motor graders to replace the two oldest graders in inventory. Purchase of a service vehicle for the road department.
