Oswald A. Thigpen, 83 SWAINSBORO--Funeral for Oswald A. Thigpen, 93, was held Friday, Nov. 10, 2006 at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Tomlinson Funeral Home with Rev. Terry Chaney and Rev. Morris Brantley officiating. Burial was in Eastbrook Cemetery. He died Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2006 at his home. Mr. Thigpen was born Nov. 8, 1922 in Treutlen County to the late Ira Von and Edith Hall Thigpen. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Ira Buddy Thigpen of Dublin. He lived in Swainsboro from 1956 until the present. He was a retired painting contractor and a member of Holton's Chapel. He also attended Oak Chapel Primitive Baptist Church and Swainsboro Church of God regularly prior to his failing health. He was in the U.S. Navy Amphibious Force during World War II in the South Pacific from 1942-1946 aboard the USS Zeilin. He was discharged in March 1946. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in July 1947 and served in Korea with the 44th Engineer Battalion. He was discharged in July 1956 from Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri. Survivors include his wife, Doris Ely Thigpen; three sons, Kendal (Alisa) Thigpen and Franz (Geanna) Thigpen of Swainsboro; Michael (Melba) Thigpen of Dublin; two daughters, Gail (Ben) Avery of Adrian; and Raquel (Mark) Allen of Twin City; a brother, Pat Thigpen of Cleveland, Tenn.; three sisters, Evelyn Jennings of Muskegon, Mich.; Geraldine Martin of Louisville; and Yuvawn Tapley of Swainsboro; 11 grandchildren, Tammy (Tad) Coleman of Rentz; Sean (Lisa) Taylor of Alpharetta; Scott (Kimbali) Taylor of Cartersville; Sheila Phillips and David Avery of Adrian; Dr. Dan Avery of Dublin; Margo (Donnie) Robertson of Kite; Sergeants Celeste (Vinnie) Higgins of Fort Sill, Okla.; Justin, Ridge and Miranda Rae Allen of Twin City; 12 great-grandchildren, Logan, Abigail and Case Coleman of Rentz; Brenda Graham, Teah Skyler and Chaz Avery of Adrian; Charis, Evan and Jack Taylor of Alpharetta; Briley Taylor of Cartersville; and Vince Higgins of Ft. Sill, Okla. Pallbearers were grandsons. Honorary pallbearers were the Hardee's Breakfast Group: Bobby Mason, Mike Carter, J.E. Moore, Vaughn Riner, Russell Collins, Sidney Lanier, Raymond Riner, Alfred Riner, Barney Hayward, J.W. Hooks, Bill Scofield, Buddy Cobb, Harry Phillips. H.B. Ely, Raymond Hendrix, Howard Yeomans, Grable Wilson, Jettie Wilcher, John A. Harris, Ralph Parker, Sidney Smith Jr., David Smith Sr., Lee A. Williams, Larry Handson and Rev. Culbreth. Tomlinson Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.
