Letters To The Editor

DEAR EDITOR:

You know most everyone is guilty of taking things for granted, including myself. Do you ever stop to think in your day to day activities what we as American citizens should be thankful for?

You wake in the morning and prepare for a normal day and probably think nothing about all our servicemen and women in all the war torn countries around the world. These brave and courageous men and women never wake up to a normal day. Their day consists of the dire uncertainty of possibly not seeing the next sunrise. They wonder if they'll ever see their loved ones again, or if they'll ever be able to enjoy the comforts of home, like we all do. These freedoms we all enjoy are because of these men and women who risk their lives every day.

No matter what your views are on the wars in the Middle East, just remember that we need to

support our troops over there. They are sworn to defend freedom, no matter what the sacrifice. Keep in mind that these troops over there are husbands, mothers, sons and daughters. They need to know they have our support.

We live in a democratic society. Just remember why. JERRY L. JOHNSON Swainsboro

DEAR EDITOR:

In response to the last week's letter from the person who was upset about campaign information being put on his car while he was in church, I would like to point out that putting material such as that on windshields is against the law in Georgia. Campaign material cannot be put on private property without the owner's permission. There is also a Swainsboro City ordinance that prohibits people from placing advertisements or handbills

in a "such manner that they many be loosened or blown by the wind and scattered."

As Keep Emanuel Beautiful director, I would like to make the public aware of this. Putting your message, whatever it is, on people's windshields is illegal. Please think about the mess that is created when disinterested people throw these flyers on the ground before they get into their vehicles and you will understand how large the problem could become. Also, if your name (or business name) is on that paper, you may be held accountable.

Thank you for the opportunity to discuss this situation. I hope that advertisers will find a different approach to dispersing material other than putting it on vehicle windshields. JOAN DUNN Director Keep Emanuel Beautiful
