Pine Tree Festival and Southeast Timber Expo a success!

Last weekend, thousands attended the 63rd annual Pine Tree Festival and the first Southeast Timber Exposition. The Pine Tree, the basis of our economy, took center stage and was a component of all activities. Weekend festivities began downtown at 6:30 am on Saturday with the Knotty Pine Race.

In the early morning hours of Sunday, May 11, residents of northern Emanuel County were awakened most abruptly as severe winds tore off roofs, snapped off trees and damaged power lines across the area.

At approximately 10:30 p.m. Monday, May 12, 2008, Swainsboro Police received a call from Emanuel Medical Center about a 15 year old boy with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. Investigators learned that the scene of the crime was at 310 Lucky St.

Like most of us, 10 year old Justin B. Plowman was asleep in his bed just before 7:00 a.m. this past Sunday morning. His family had moved from Michigan to Georgia only a week ago in hopes of finding a better life. Justin, his six brothers and sisters and his parents moved to East Georgia to be near other family members in the Kite area.

They recognized students from ECI and SHS FCCLA and FBLA organizations for their participation in State competition and impending participation in national competition. They also recognized the Valedictorian and Salutatorian of ECI and SHS.

Each Friday and Saturday nights we gathered from all parts of the county and surrounding counties at the Record Hop. 5 Years Ago The Pine Tree Breeze cycling tour raised $2000 to benefit Herrington Homestead in Nunez. The perfect weather allowed for a good turnout of cyclists from throughout the area for the 4th annual event. Riders of all ages from as far away as Wilkes County enjoyed cycling up to 100 miles.

Jaimison Smith, son of Sabrena Smith formerly of Swainsboro, participated in the 2008 First Robotics Championship in Atlanta on April 17-19. Jaimison is a sophomore at Frederick Douglass High School in Atlanta. Jaimison is in the 100 Blackmen of Atlanta Scholar Program called Project Success. The First Championship was founded by Dean Kamen.

Over the weekend the Swainsboro Tiger baseball team made the long journey all the way to Fitzgerald to challenge the Hurricanes on their own turf. They were set to play a double header on Friday with a possible third game on Saturday if needed. The first game was a very close one.

DEA wins first round of state playoffs

The Eagles won the first round of state by beating Monsignor Donovan. In the first game Hudson Johnson took the mound and gave up one hit, one walk, and struck out three, while giving up three unearned runs. Those would be the only runs Rams in the contest. Brandon Blount would finish things off for the Eagles giving up one hit and striking out one.

After much anticipation, the 2008 Sportsman's Raffle benefiting The Sunshine House Regional Children's Advocacy Center was held on the evening of April 25, 2008. Several hundred raffle tickets were sold in hopes of winning the grand prize, a Beretta Silver Pigeon 12 gauge shotgun. The gun, valued at $2,350 was donated by a committee of friends of The Sunshine House CAC.
