Members of the Emanuel Medical Center Authority met Tuesday, July 7. Authority members voted unanimously to change health care providers for the employees of the hospital. “We recommend going with the Blue Cross/Blue Shield plan 5509,” said authority member Joe English, chair of the committee researching employee benefits.

“We would like to begin this evening with OurTown Hero. This month’s award goes to someone who takes care of people,” Mayor Schwabe said at Monday nights City Council Meeting. “She is a pillar of the community, an asset to the community and her church and we need more like her. OurTown Hero is Mrs. Ann Pebbles” July’s Hero continues the monthly tradition in Swainsboro of honoring a member of the community who has dedicated their time and energy to bettering the community through example, a spirit of volunteerism and service. This month’s Hero was nominated by Councilman Stafford and Councilman Edenfield.

The council heard from Downtown Development Director Anthony Faris about the ongoing Creative Marketplace Competition. The competition is designed to help new businesses operate in downtown Swainsboro. “The purpose of the competition is to offer incentives to businesses in three categories: restaurant, retail business, and arts and entertainment business. We are hoping to bring new businesses and new ideas to downtown,” Faris said. He requested that the city offer three incentives, including a free business license for a year, free building inspection, and free water after the $32 minimum charge.

On Tuesday, July 7, numerous dignitaries, faculty members, and students were present for the unveiling of the new signage at Southeastern Technical College Swainsboro Campus. A similar celebration will be held at the main campus in Vidalia at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 14.

Denise Michele, Area Supervisor for Smart Styles Salons, and Teresa Cochran, Swainsboro Smart Styles Salon Manager, made a presentation of the benefits for working for Smart Styles Salons. Denise explained to the students about the salary incentives, educational opportunities, management opportunities and a chance to advance to platform artist. She told of her days in the salon and how quickly she became salon manager and then area supervisor. Teresa told the students of her experiences here in the Swainsboro Smart Styles and how quickly her paycheck increased with the growing client base and also retail sales. Teresa is a 2007 graduate of the Swainsboro Tech cosmetology department.

Jonathan Bennett, Athletic Director and Head Men's Basketball Coach at Montreat College in Montreat, North Carolina, announces today that Mike Bender will be the Head Baseball Coach for the Cavaliers next season. Bender will take over the vacant position from former Head Coach Travis Little. Bender has been the Assistant Baseball Coach at Montreat College for the last six years.

Swainsboro-Emanuel County Recreation Department’s Youth Golf Camp was held during the month of June. Participating in the program were Garrett Claxton, Luke Fagler, Gage Bell, Gage Hooks, Blake Williams, Maddux Lewis, Nate Gallian, Gary Brown, Hunter Caraway, Justin Moore, Jake Smith, Jahri Brown, Brandon Jones and Brice Bonds. Instructor for the program was Mac Chappell. Assistant instructor was Charlie Chappell.
