FAA to hold public meeting on new military flight regulations

Published: Thursday, October 9, 2008 12:06 PM EDT
A proposal to allow military fighter aircraft (F-16s) to fly training missions as low as 500 feet above ground at speeds up to 650 mph is being considered by the Federal Aviation Administration.

The Swainsboro/Emanuel County Chamber of Commerce has received notification from the FFA that a public meeting will be held to hear comments on proposed changes to the Military Operations Area (MOA) which directly affect the Swainsboro, Millen, Louisville, Sandersville, and Waynesboro airports.

The meeting is slated to take place on Thursday, October 23, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Augusta Regional Airport, 1501 Aviation Way, Augusta, Ga.

At the meeting, representatives from the U.S. Air Force will present a formal briefing on the proposed establishment of new Military Operations Areas, which are referred to as “Bulldog C and E MOAs.” The change could significantly impact operations at the Swainsboro/Emanuel County Airport by limiting arriving and departing aircraft, according to Ken Warnock, Emanuel County Airport Chairman.

The fact-finding informal meeting will be held to solicit comments from local governments, businesses, organizations, and individuals, including local pilots.

“We believe the changes in the proposed MOA will negatively impact our citizenry from local businesses to livestock growers to anyone using our airport,” stated Bill Rogers Jr., Chamber President.

“Quite frankly, military jets flying over Emanuel County at such low altitudes are not an appealing thought. Just as importantly, these changes may limit arrivals and departures at our airport, thus impacting our economic development efforts. Local folks need to be aware of these changes and let their feelings be known,” he added.

Any person wishing to make a written or oral presentation on the proposed changes in the MOA is invited to attend the Augusta meeting, which will be held in the large conference room at the Augusta Regional Airport.

Persons wishing to submit a written statement can do so by either submitting those comments at the meeting, or by delivering them to the Swainsboro/Emanuel County Chamber of Commerce Building before October 23rd. Comments should be addressed to:

Rogers added that citizens should also contact the offices of Congressman John Barrow, Senator Johnny Isakson or Senator Saxby Chambliss to express views on the matter.
